Say Hi There To My Bad Body Double

Hello friend.

How are things going with you? Life continues much as it always has here in rural Michigan. I procrastinate more than I should and wind up unmotivated. Somehow events persist around me.

"This is no good," I tell myself. I've got a straight shot of work until after Christmas with no vacation time planned. I can't have burnt out this fast after my vacation in July. It seems to have happened, though. I need to find a way to get what I need done without all of the pressure I seem to put on myself.

For about a week, I'm great. I vacuum the rooms, do the dishes, get laundry done, stay on top of clutter. Then, something hits. I feel under the weather; I work a weird shift; someone wants to get together to talk at the last minute.

This disruption is no one's fault but my own. I still feel slightly powerless by it, though.

Something to work through. I have full control over all of this. It's my life. I decide how to react to all of it. It's up to me to take control.

Have a great afternoon. I hope this finds you well.

Time Goes Quicker Between the Two of Us

Hello friend.

Welcome to Fall. It's really almost here, I'm so very excited.

Life has been busy for me; I've been trying to stay busy to keep myself from obsessing about my losses. That's how I cope. Take on a new project, learn a new skill. It helps me focus on the things that bring me joy and let go of the things that tie me down.

My recent addiction is vlogging. I've been vlogging for almost a month now - I do a weekly update over on youtube that you can find here. Yes, I know. I plugged it last blog. Don't mind me as I drive the point home, it's really fun to do! Every week I scramble to get it ready on Saturday nights - sometimes after work. Every week, it makes me so happy to see that piece of me out there to be witnessed.

I watched a movie a few weeks ago where a wife talked about her marriage. She said about it (approximately) "you're saying yes. Yes, I will witness your life. I will notice. I will care."

That got me thinking. I don't plan on being with someone in that way. So, what will my legacy be? Who will be my witness? I witness hundreds of people online every day. After seeing my good friend Lindsay do her daily vlog for almost a year, I got the bug. It hit me; the world could be my witness. Or, the internet could. The number of views I get doesn't matter to me. The simple fact that a piece of me is out there is what matters.

I plan on keeping this blog up as well. We'll see how well that goes - it always seems like a more personal piece of me on here.

Again, we'll see. Thank you, friend.

We've Spent a Stolen Season Taking All that We Can Take II

The time has come for beginnings and endings. Letting go of the old and transforming into the new.

Several months back, my apartment caught on fire at 3 am in the morning. Everything that sated and secured me dwelled within that space. In the moment I walked outside of the building, I came immediately to terms with the simple fact that I might never seen any of it again.

So much has changed since that time. Much of the smaller things I possessed were salvageable; however, I find now that I don't really want a lot of them. When I was trying to find myself several years ago, I acquired and acquired as much as possible. Books, DVDs, kitchen supplies, towels... it goes on. I kept useless memorabilia from other points in my life. Boxes of it.

Everything tied me down and into that past. Don't misunderstand where I'm going with this; I respect where I have been - it has made me as I am.

In the months following the fire, I found myself trying to live as I had before it. Inevitably, I failed horribly daily. My kitchen had been thrown together and I couldn't find anything to cook. Clothes had been piled in the closet with no rhyme or reason and again, I couldn't find what I was looking for. Books, important papers, candles, you name it.

This led to daily frustration and disappointment in myself. This crept into other parts of my life; relationships suffered, my performance at work suffered, I couldn't connect to things I had enjoyed doing.

I needed a change. My life is mine, damn it. I'm going to make the most of it.

The choice became clear to me, almost as if it was guided to me. All I had to do was see the signs and listen to what was being told to me.

Let go.

I'm relatively controlling, and it hasn't been easy. It is necessary. Discard the pieces of my past that I have no obligation to anymore. Let go of the burdens that I've carried. The guilt. Unfulfilled promises. Acceptance of my own brokenness. Change the things I can change. Like reorganizing my kitchen so that I can find things!

It's all within my reach. So often I think I feel helpless by outside circumstances. In growing I've started to learn that I have the power to react to them. Instead of feeling helpless, accept what I can't control and spin it as I want it to be.

There's still so much to be done, but I'm working on it. I'll be posting here about my usual fun stuff, and now you can even follow my personal vlog on youtube. Check out my first video!

Thank you, friend.

I See the Stars Through A Mirror

Good evening, friend.

I don't know if I've given up on trying to chronicle my trip to NYC or not. It's all starting to get fuzzy. Some details are clear as crystal, and others just start to haze over in the madness and sheer insanity of it all. I saw Sting perform live. In a limited run of the musical he wrote. "This is ridiculous, what am I doing here, I'm in the wrong story..."

To top that off, a good friend of mine just published her debut novel! I know, I know. I talked about it in the last blog - but it bears repeating! Such a fun read, very well told. Check it out, The Beast by Lindsay Mead. It's also available at Amazon. I'm so excited about this one - I was one of the first beta readers to finish it, and I haven't been able to talk about it at all with anyone until now!

The book is the first book in a Steampunk retelling of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. What can I say? There are hellhounds, badass heroines, awesome gadgets, memorable characters, and secrets lurking throughout the book that I have a feeling will all tie together in the end! I can't wait!

How's life for me? It keeps going. Picking up the pieces after the fire, still. The new apartment is starting to feel like home, and I'm grateful for that. My own novel is coming along as well, with some encouragement from one Lindsay Mead. I'll be taking some time off in the next few weeks to work on both and to take some time for myself.

I'm also thinking about doing a weekly vlog on youtube... much to ponder I suppose. As with this blog, it would be a matter of staying on top of and personal discipline... which I'm ever so great at... as you can clearly see...

At any rate, much love and I'll talk with you soon.

We're All Mad Here, and It's Okay

Hello friend.

I'm doing an awful job at keeping you updated. Promises and assurances may not be the best move on my part, considering my history; however my intention remains to keep this blog up, going, and fun to read. That said, I'll stop talking about my guilt for not keeping it so!

Personally, not much has been happening aside from work. I did go to an excellent concert headlined by Lindsey Stirling. Such a good show. The opener, Karmin, did an excellent job as well and I haven't been able to stop listening to their music. My friend Lindsay Mead vlogged the experience and you can watch that here.

Speaking of Lindsay Mead, she has a new book coming out near the end of this month. It's being released on ebook first, then making its way to paperback and hardcover. It can be preordered on Amazon. If you have a Nook device, it should be available to purchase on June 22nd! I've had a chance to read The Beast, and it's an excellent steampunk retelling of Beauty and the Beast. /shamelessplug

At any rate, the concert thrilled me. I haven't been to a live concert in several years, and this may not have been the show to do it. Lindsey was just too good. Her songs, while excellent in just listening or enjoyable to see the music video for, were turned into pure performance art. Lights, shadows, screens, and all kinds of other special effects she employed to tell moving stories. It moved me how well she told stories with, for the most part, songs that had no lyrics.

Thank you for listening.

What is the Force that Binds the Stars

Good evening friend!

It's part three of my epic journey to New York! Time to get this story on the books.

To recap: my bags have been packed, everything has been planned, and I was just waiting for Jewel to arrive with the rental car.

In a few short minutes she arrives! Many hugs are had as well as nervous screams of excitement. I grab my things and we start our epic adventure!

We drive south towards the Ohio Turnpike - we'll take that most of the way to the city. It's just like old times between us - we start talking as if we're in the middle of some great theatrical production that we're in technical rehearsals for. The new Into the Woods movie, the upcoming The Last Five Years, local community theater gossip - nothing is off the table for us. Life, family, work, changes in all of the above.

I'm honored to have a friend like her. No matter the time that passes, we pick up just where we left up and grow from there.

At any rate, in a few hours we decide to stop and take a break at a rest station. The turnpike rest stops are fantastic for having great amenities and actual eateries. Well, a couple of fast food options instead of a vending machine. Still, salad in hand and Jewel at my side, we sit in a corner of the pavilion that isn't being cleaned. (It was about 9:30 PM at this point, so the janitorial staff were hard at work)

We sit there eating, minding our own business when a true character comes to sit right behind us. I managed to snap this picture before Jewel's giggling made being sneaky an impossibility.  In retrospect, he wasn't all that odd, just out of place. I suppose we were too - I wonder if they were taking pictures of us characters?

After some giggling and a few uncontrollable salad-spitting laughs, it becomes apparent that what we need at that exact moment of time is more caffeine. Right? Sure, this sounds like a great idea! It will definitely help silence the giggling.

I guess this 24 hour Starbucks in the rest stop will be handy.

Before we knew it, we each had a single shot of espresso ready to down. I tell her I like mine with some raw sugar (it tastes like espresso candy at the end), and she tries it.

Mmmm... coffee. This will go well. With eagerness we bundle up again and wade out into the harsh January night.

At this point, I hoped the night would never end. Somehow the espresso allowed for a more honest conversation. Maybe it's like ADD medication and brought us back down to earth instead of hyping us up?

Religion, science, politics; open discussion, respectful disagreement in some cases. The miles of road passed underneath us as music played on underneath our discussions. Into the mountains of Pennsylvania we drove. Wait, the fuel tank is how low? How far do we have until the next town?

Until part four

We've Spent A Stolen Season Taking All That We Can Take

Hello there friend.

It's a difficult blog I write today. Have you heard the term "the dark night of the soul?" I really enjoy its connotation. In essence, the term speaks about a time in a person's life where that person goes through great struggle. Things seem dark and most likely depressing. Things that don't bother the person become mountains to overcome.

For me, the dark night comes every few years following a great change. My father going to war, leaving college, job changes, moving. This time it's trial by fire. The first few days were the hardest for me. I got terribly sick and terribly depressed. My family and friends surrounded me and protected me from the worst of myself. Still, I haven't felt those feelings off loss and emptiness in years. Every day I come back to my new apartment to find totes off crap and piles of things that still need to be sorted in every area of my space. It leaves me disorganized and almost dizzy.

I imagine it almost feels like someone who has lost memory with age. Where do I keep glasses? Bowls? I need a cheese grater and I know I have three and can't find any of them in the cupboards. So I do the same two meals with the things I do know where to locate. Frozen pizza or a canned meal.

I have been trying to get out of the box and try new things - for instance I've been trying to eat smaller portions and incorporate a fruit and vegetable smoothie in the place of one of my meals. It's helping me feel better physically, but my feeling of confusion and inadequacy continues. So the totes stay stacked around the apartment and I've learned just to walk around them.

So I've come to the fork in the road. It's the place where I need to be bigger than the issues that surround me. Bigger than defeat. Bigger than not knowing. Bigger than depression. Bigger than anxiety. Big enough to not just get on with my life, but to start living it again.

In truth, I wasn't aware of how bad it had gotten. Then, this weekend I went on a small camping retreat with Patrick that was much needed. However it was just long enough, and just relaxing enough that when I was thrust back into reality and life it was as if someone had dunked my head in cold water. Wake up call.

The dark night of the soul is a time of testing. It's time for me to wake up. To be.

I Can't Believe You Really Came

Good evening, friend.

Sorry I've been away for a bit. Life has a bit nuts - I'll give you a hint. This was my view at 3:03 AM just over three weeks ago:

Needless to say, it kind of threw a wrench into my life. I had never known before what it was like to be without a home. For several minutes I stood, just watching the apartment I'd worked hard for get closer and closer to being consumed by the flames.

In that moment I had to face the possibility that everything I had gathered would be gone. A rather wordy way to say that I was scared shitless.

I had never had to face the possibility that at the end of the day I would not have shelter over my head. That kind of realization changed me to the core.

It was remarkable how fast news of the fire spread. I hadn't even begun texting people to let them know I was okay when coworkers who had seen the fire on the news and started sending me messages. Was I okay; did I need anything; was that my building? Thank goodness I had grabbed my phone in my haste to leave.

My mother picked up the phone within the first few rings. She and my father would be down soon. All the while Patrick - who I'd called first - waited with me. The 24 hour doughnut shop down the street from my apartment was a buzz of activity that morning. Patrick and I grabbed some doughnuts and waited there for my parents to arrive. Around us all the regulars chirped on and on about the fire. Speculation flew through the air as several of the tenants of my old apartment wandered in and out. One even slept in the far corner.

All the while friends and family were sending me messages, asking what I needed. I could feel their love and support from many miles away, across the country. Honestly, I'm not sure how I would have made it through that day without all of their support and love.

The hours passed and the days went by. People came out of the woodwork to support me and help me out. I eventually did get into my old apartment. It was unreal going in after all that had happened - and yet most everything was the same as I'd left it. Just wet. Dishes were in the sink, waiting to be washed. DVDs were in a pile by the doors to my deck - where I had set them to be organized. Several board games sat at my kitchen table, never to be played again. One that I had just gotten, Onirim, had popped out of its box - the cards in it had gotten so waterlogged that they'd expanded.

Over two days several friends, family members, and I put my old belongings that we thought we could save into plastic totes to be carried to my new apartment. I'm still amazed just how much we were able to salvage. It's been a long process sorting through the old stuff, washing old clothes and blankets, trying to get the smell of smoke off of everything, but it's coming along. I'll get back to blogging regularly, but I beg your forgiveness for being silent. I've had a few other things on my mind.

Much love to you, my friend. Remember that everything surrounding you is just stuff in this physical world we inhabit. It's the people and the connections you make that matter. They'll still be there when you have nothing else to hold you up.

It's All There in the Gospel

Good evening, my friend.

Let's set the scene. Saturday night, mid January. I'm all packed in a simple backpack - I have charging cables, a change of clothes, nicer clothes for the show, some water and basic food supplies. All I have to do is wait for Jewel to get there with the rental car and we'll be on our way.

Everything has been planned - as much as we can anyway. We'll try to get to the city early enough to be on one of the Sunday morning shows, we'll hang around the city a few hours and see the show. Then, it's back off again and back to reality. We've got this. Weather seems like it will be clear - cold, but clear.

I get a text from Jewel - she's on her way! My nerves are firing with excited anxiety. So many things could be going wrong, but I have to trust that things will be all right.

It's What You Do

Good evening, my friend.

Remember when I said about a week ago that I wouldn't be browsing Kickstarter anymore? That worked really well for me until I happened upon one that looked oh, so pretty.

It's looks that get my every time, I swear! I scrolled through the new projects in Kickstarter for fun the other day, feeling accomplished after my most recent project Unspeakable Words was backed successfully. With pride, I looked about at the other board games on the table. One of the thumbnails blew me away as soon as I saw it. Be careful, I said to myself. Pretty art doesn't make a successful project.

But then I looked at some of the project details. Entropy is a card game about different characters who's worlds have collided into a nexus point, and the characters have to find all of the pieces to their home to return there. The first one home is the winner. Simple enough, I thought. Now, to look at the art. It floored me. I spent several minutes just admiring the color schemes and the thematic concepts behind this game.

No, I told myself. Don't back it - you just backed two other pointless projects. Do you enjoy the way this game plays, or do you just want it for the art? Did it matter? That was my second voice - you know the demon on the other shoulder. So what if I hadn't seen a game play video and just wanted the art. The art in itself was valuable enough to own at their asking price. And I would get a cool metal token for backing the project!

That evil devil on the other shoulder. Why am I always listening to him? I told myself I'd at least let a day pass - give me time to rest and think on it. Watching a video on how the game played might also help. But no, I couldn't last four hours and I'd already backed it.

Buyer's remorse? Not yet, at least. It looks like a beautiful game - one I'll definitely sleeve. I'm not worried about getting the cards - the project creators have done a project before and people got their product then. It'll be the months of waiting for it to go into production; finalizing rules and art, sending it to the printer, fulfilling orders, sending it all the way from Australia to my little hamlet in Michigan. Those months I might be remorseful. Who knows though.

Do they make a 12 step program for Kickstarter backing?

One Day He Dreamed of A Ship in the World

Hello friend of mine.

So... it's February and I still haven't told you about the events of January. New things keep stacking up - I suppose it makes for an interesting life. I always seem to get behind. Forgive me for that. I do have something rather exciting to share with you, however: my impromptu trip to New York City (part 1)!

My good friend Jewel (I talked about her in an old blog entry) decided to text me mid January out of the blue.

"Looking for someone to go to New York with me overnight next week, interested?"

That fateful text.

"I'm very interested," I responded enthusiastically. Now we just had to plan around my preset work schedule.

Come to find out, Sting had written a musical (I know, right?) called The Last Ship. I knew next to nothing about it, but Jewel loved the idea of seeing it on Broadway. She'd seen a clip of it on The Today Show To give some perspective: I've always been a theater person. I've done many productions in school and out, doing everything from acting to technical work to directing. My dream career used to be working on the Broadway stage. That passion runs deep to me.

Funny thing, though - I've never been to NYC, not to mention Broadway. When this chance appeared, I jumped on it. We looked into flight and as it turns out flying can be expensive booking three days before you leave. No go on that front. How about a drive? We'd worked out that we could leave on a Saturday night and come back by Monday morning - when I had to work at 7 AM. Could we manage the drive in that slot of time? It was a 10 hour drive nonstop.

For some unknown reason we decided to make the trip. We started to make secondary plans - should we leave earlier Saturday? Who would get the rental car? Matinee on Sunday? How is the weather looking?

Meanwhile I'd made plans to play board games with a friend of mine early Saturday morning. I did some quick mental math. 7 AM Saturday to 11 Monday night = very tiring weekend.

Was this a good idea? Was this the most reckless thing I'd ever done? Yes. I'll never forget it.

I Have to be there Before Daybreak

Good morning, friend.

So I have a rather unhealthy relationship with sites like Ebay, Coolstuffinc, and Kickstarter. There are so many awesome things to find online, and I simply have to have them all. For instance:

I decided to back Unspeakable Words on Kickstarter. I've always wanted this game, and it's been out of print for over a year. 'Simple enough, I'll get this one thing and show some restraint,' I think to myself. Then it hits me: the kicker. 'Why don't I just look around a bit and see what else is on kickstarter at the moment,' I let my mind wander. Bad decision.

If you don't know, Kickstarter is a crowd funding web site where creators can post projects and get average Joes to fund them. This eliminates corporate greed (in theory) and gets money directly to the creators, while also allowing the Joes to get a great project in the end. People kickstart many things from music albums to live concerts. It's really quite fascinating. I have a weakness for board game kickstarters.

So there I am, looking through the kickstarters coming up, and I notice some striking art. 'Arcana Playing Cards?' I ask myself. 'I'll have to check this one out,' I think innocently as I open up the project, completely not intending to get sucked into another project, particularly one involving playing cards. I have several decks, I don't need a fancy one.

I was not prepared for the beauty that awaited me. This project, Arcana Playing Cards, floored me with it's beauty. Then I saw that there were two versions of the deck you could buy - a light themed one and a dark themed one. What really made this deck unique to me was its integration with the old Tarot decks, and the resulting art. Guess what? As an add-on you can buy the cards that will even out the 58 playing cards to the 78 Tarot card deck. But wait, there's more! You can also get beautifully crafted boxes to put them in, wood protective boxes with a metal stamp on it, specially minted coins to match the art, etc, etc, etc.

Well, I wasn't planning on spending so much on a deck of cards. It's just so beautiful. As of this post, the playing cards still have a day left to kickstart - feel free to go over there and back their project. The guy does great art, and it's wonderful to see someone so passionate about their creative endeavors. A piece of advice before you go:

Just look at the one project on kickstarter. It's a terrible downward spiral.

I'm still remembering

Mmmm... coffee. That is all.

Doo Be Dah

Hey there friend. Sorry that it's taken me so long to get back to this. Between podcasting, work, and several other adventures I'll write you about, it's been a busy month of January.

Work continues to go well for me, though it has gotten busier and more hectic with the passing of the days. A new position has brought increased responsibility and stress levels, but I've been trying to handle it well. A coworker and I have been reading a book called The Energy Bus, and discussing it when we can. I've really enjoyed what I've read so far, and most of all the basic principle of the book: you are the driver of your own bus. I'm in charge of my life. Yes, things may happen that are out of my control, but I have the opportunity and power to respond in a positive way.

This has really helped me deal with the hardships this winter, and turn them around to my advantage. It has also helped me take more ownership over my life. So often I make excuses about this or that - the things that weigh me down. All of the sudden dishes have piled up in the sink, the floors need to be vacuumed, and laundry has piled up and become unmanageable. Reading this book and following some of the basic principles has helped me end that destructive cycle and take ownership over the excess tasks in my life that I find so tedious.

I've been really stepping up my coffee game, trying to work on my latte art skills - I have a few photos to share with you over the next few days that demonstrate this. I hope to be able to get a good coffee grinder in the next few weeks to further up my game. My mom got me several other useful tools like a bottomless portafilter that have been helping me adjust my skills. I can notice the quality of the end product improve.

I recently got an expansion to Eldritch horror called The Mountains of Madness - I haven't gotten an opportunity to try it yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. I should be able to break it out tomorrow after I get a few tasks done. Another board game I love, Elder Sign, also has an expansion that should be coming out soon - I'm really looking forward to picking that up and trying it. Hopefully it'll integrate a bit easier than the Mountains of Madness expansion. I have a hard enough time beating Eldritch Horror I'm not sure how I'll do.

My sister got me a small expansion to another board game, Arkham Horror, which takes the number of expansions I have for that game up to 5. Only 3 more to go and my collection will be complete! My first playthrough with that expansion was also very exciting and memorable. From the first turn, the game had it in for me. If you enjoy Arkham Horror, I definitely recommend the King in Yellow expansion, probably my favorite so far of the smaller expansions.

Well, I think that's about all I have for tonight - stay tuned for the blizzard I had to walk through and about my impromptu trip to New York City!

Much love to you, my friend.

Have You Got It In You?

Good evening my friend. I've been spending the day playing board games. Earlier my brother and his wife were here and we played a game of Robinson Crusoe. This was excellent and fun - I loved it! After they left I opened up Pandemic (which I bought for myself) and played a game. I narrowly won but had discovered after the game that I had sort of cheated. Oh well, haha. I played it a bit more like how you play another game by Matt Leacock called Forbidden Island.

After that I pulled out Betrayal at House on the Hill. Oh man, was this a fun thematic game. I started the game with a high school football player and two kids going into this creepy house alone. I had set it up in my mind that it was some horrible babysitting gig and that the football player had gotten lost - or maybe he had loured these poor kids here to play a sinister prank on them, maybe worse? Only time would tell.

You see, in Betrayal at House on the Hill play begins as a cooperative game so all of the players work together. Near the middle of the game something called The Haunt happens and one of the other players betrays the others and the game usually ends in someone's horrific death. It's a great representation of B horror movies.

At any rate, in the beginning my unsuspecting characters explored this mysterious mansion, uncovering rooms and gaining items. A lot of terrible things happened before The Haunt even started. The house shook, the wind howled, and my characters were starting to lose their sanity and physical powers. Then about midway through the game, my football playing creep of an investigator found a creepy book that gave instructions on how to summon a demon lord.

He made his way swiftly through the house using an enchanted elevator to the chapel where he summoned the demon lord. He should have been wary, though, because the demon lord immediately slayed him and started to hunt down the poor children. Peter, the boy, was nearby and took the enchanted elevator across the house to where the girl was exploring. They rallied together and found some weapons, then took the elevator around the house, running from the demon lord until they could sneak in the chapel where the evil book lay.

The girl (whose name I can't remember) grabbed the book and ran back to the elevator before the demon lord could get back to it. In a hurry, the two children took the elevator throughout the house until they managed to find the furnace room, where they threw the book into the flames, silencing away the demon forever.

I was absolutely shocked that the children ended up getting out alive. As soon as the football player turned traitor, his stats maxed out practically, making him remarkably stronger than either. The demon lord was also incredibly strong, though not as fast as the two children.

After that I played a quick game of Elder Sign with the Unseen Forces expansion. I played in anticipation of the Gates of Arkham expansion coming out in the next few months. Who's excited? This guy.

I wanted to play a game of Arkham Horror with the new King in Yellow expansion that I got for Christmas, but it's getting late and I don't know if that would be a good idea.... but I could at least set it up.

I hope you have a great night, my friend. I'm off to game some more!

Thank You For Finding Me, and Thank You For the Care

Hey there, friend.

Well, National Novel Writing Month is over with now and I can get on with other parts of my life. I did relatively well, finishing two thirds of the goal in the alotted time.

Aside from that, life goes on. Work goes well. I haven't been sleeping all that well, but that's a whole seperate blog topic.

I've really been liking what I've been seeing from the new Into the Woods movie. It's been one of my favorite broadway shows for many years now, and I'm thrilled about the attention that it's getting. I had been worried several months ago, as details started to emerge about it. Certain scenes that I am rather fond of in the musical were deemed too inappropriate for a Disney movie. I can understand that, I just wish it wasn't necessary. If it's done the way it often is on stage, children probably wouldn't get that it's inappropriate in the first place.

Who knows, though? I don't make movies, I just comment on them.

In other news, I still haven't gotten my Christmas decorations up. It's very unusual for me, usually I start to go crazy around the first of November, packing away my Halloween things and getting my Christmas decorations out. I'll have to get on that as Christmas is creeping closer. I think I have most of my presents picked out, but I haven't bought very many of them.

Well, friend, I think I'm going to sign off here. Have a great night and stay warm until I talk with you again.

I Should Probably Say Why I'm Running

Well hello there, it's been a moment.

Life has been good here, very busy with National Novel Writing Month, work, and juggling various other social obligations.

My novel is coming along well, and I'm hoping to spend most of my days today and tomorrow catching up and getting ahead. I'm about four thousand words behind today which is easily doable. If you want to check out my NaNoWriMo progress, feel free to check out my profile. It almost feels like cheating to be writing something other than my novel, so I'll keep this as a short update!

Much love, my friend. I hope you're well.

Knock Knock, Are You Alone?

Good evening, friend. Life continues to be busy. I''ve been taking solace in the quiet moments between this and that. Between here and there. NaNoWriMo preperations are under way for me, and I'm attempting to narrow down basic character information so I don't have to worry about it when I'm writing away.

I've noticed that people recently seem to show a certain amount of disinterest which is weirding me out. I went to a drag show on Saturday night and all of the queens and kings performing seemed so disconnected from what they were doing. High energy, but you could see in their eyes that they were somewhere else entirely. I go to the grocery store and the clerk ringing me up won't even make eye contact. I don't know if the moon is in an odd phase or what's happening. Maybe I'm the one that's disconnected and am only noticing in other people what I'm unable to see in myself.

At any rate, I've been planning out a little halloween get together for me and a couple of my friends. I'm hoping that it will be fun. Some snacks, maybe some board games, and a lot of laughs. On the note of snacks, I've learned that I cannot keep lemon stuffed or any Oreos on hand at my house. It doesn't matter if I like the taste of them anymore, they're just so crunchy and delightful that I can't stop eating. Next thing I know, the box is gone. Apparently I need to work on my portion control.

Thanks for listening to my very random ramblings. I hope you have a wonderful time until I see you again.

I Put a Spell on You

Good evening my friend. I'm just listening to Annie Lennox's most recent album (just out!) and I'm loving it so far. I hope you understand that I'll be talking a lot about music in my blog. For goodness sakes, it's called Just Elevator Music, haha. I like to think of it as just that extra voice playing as you go from this thing to that. In turn, expressing those voices and influences that play in the background of my life.

I really like this concept, and I've been thinking about adapting it into a podast. Just a personal journal of my life. Then again, I probably wouldn't blog as often... so there is that. I guess it's just a matter of finding out what's best for me. However, until that becomes aparent, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

The fall colors here in Michigan are absolutely beautiful. I think they're just past their peak, and the leaves are really coming down now. There's something about the weather in fall I can't do without. The wind blows barely icily, the clouds start to roll lazily by and cover the sky, and the sun starts to get less intense. Taking walks through it all remains a guilty pleasure of mine. I love to sit beside a river or stream and take it all in. I watch the birds fly south, and all of the other animals begin to take refuge.

I've really enjoyed reading through my collection of HP Lovecraft. I'm a big fan of the board games Arkham Horror, Elder Sign, and Eldritch Horror which feature heavy influences from his works. This time of year is excellent for some good horror reading. In particular, I just finished The Statement of Randolph Carter the other night. Really well done, great build of suspense, excellent ending. Short but sweet.

And now, my friend, it is time for me to go to bed. I hope you have a wonderful night and day tomorrow.

The Coffee's Never Strong Enough

Good evening, my dear friend. As you can see, I'm up very late again. All day it seems to me that something's pulling at me from the outside. A force penatrating my spirit, leaving me uneasy. Laying in bed I realized the need to create and communicate to help ward off this sensation. I get like this every now and again: unsure and emotional. Sometimes I joke that it's my "man period."

I don't ever really know what brings it one, but I have my guesses. Big changes in friendships and work are to come, as well as several side projects. As you know, I've decided to take place in National Novel Writing Month in November. It approaches faster than I think I'm ready for. Such a huge undertaking, and I can't even figure out the name of the main character. I'll figure out, haha. I think that's part of the beauty of NaNoWriMo: you have to just do. Making the best novel isn't the point. The point is to finish one in 30 days. That means that all involved have to write over 2,000 words every day. In that time, there is no chance to second guess.

This will be very good for me, I think. Not being able to obsess and perfect something; just to finish it. I'm already building playlists, thinking of overarching themes and settings, an trying to get as prepared as possible for it. I think that's one reason I've been talking so much about music to you. Trying to get my descriptive muscles moving. I really wish I could type as fast as my brain can think! Just imagine all the work I could get done.

I doubt that the novel I write will ever be available for publication, but I really think that it would give me the self confidence to be able to get the other ideas I want to share with the world out into publication. It's a step. And that's one thing I've really been working on in my personal life: taking that first step. Many times for me, that's the hardest part. Of course, that then leads to the next hardest part: the follow through. Workout routines have never really worked out for me because I lack the effort to follow through. Then again, I really hate physical exercise. You get my idea, though.

I really think that's life, though. You take a step, and it's the most difficult thing you've had to do. Then, you take the next step, and it's just as hard - if not more so. Most people give up when they reach that second barrior in something new. Maybe the third or fourth. Somehow, though, I have got to know that it's worth it. It's worthwhile to overcome and move on to new and unseen territory.

That's sort of why I'm excited for NaNoWriMo. It's something I've always wanted to do, it's something to overcome. It's a way to rid myself of all of this unwanted creative dark matter. It just swirls inside me, a biproduct of the human existance. I have to find new ways to let it out in productive and beautiful ways. If I don't, it bottles up and tends to force itsself out in ugly and... unfortunate ways.

At any rate, I've been very excited to pen an idea that I've been working for the past few weeks. When I decided to take on a novel, I had to decide if I wanted to choose from a list of ideas I'd already thought about, or if I would do something new. I chose the latter, for the thrill of it. Well, mostly that if it was very terrible, it wouldn't be an idea that I held dear to me and I might be able to just chuck it out the window!

The concept that I'm running with now is heavily inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, though I doubt that we'll see any of his universe show up. Just general ideas, themes, and vague images that give me inspiration. I was reading one of his stories before bed and this idea really jumped at me. To paraphrase, any hack can draw a scary image for the cover of a magazine. Only a true artist can make a creation that causes a stirring in us, that speaks to the unconcious portion of the brain. That's because the artist has had direct contact with the reality of what they're conveying through their chosen medium.

Those words really got me thinking. I have to portray this story in a realistic way, a way that sounds more like memory than imagination. I think if I come at the novel with that approach, I'll already have a much more quality piece of work. I think my general concept is that the novel will be a tome, written by a high priest of an ancient god that has invaded the modern world. The story will be almost a history that the god has instructed the priest to set to paper as a testiment to its greatness. How the twenty-first century found itsself crippled in a matter of days to a force it couldn't comprehend.

It's a bit rough, I'll admit. But it's something to work with, and I'm grateful for it. With those thoughts, it's probably time for me to turn in. Goodnight, my dear friend.
